When asked why I am running for Congress, I respond that right now is the ideal time to get new leadership in Congress to solve our community and country’s problems. Indeed, a red wave is going to sweep our nation in this November’s mid-term elections because the mood of our entire country is worried about many, many things ranging from rampant inflation to unnecessary government mandates, sky-high gas prices, a torrent of crime, growing homeless on our streets, bare shelves at the grocery stores, censorship of free speech, global humiliation from the Afghanistan exit debacle including the profoundly sad and unnecessary death of our soldiers, the nation’s inability to prevent Russia’s aggression, critical theory being taught to our children in schools and defending other nations’ borders while not even defending our own borders. In light of these issues facing us on a daily basis, I feel compelled to fight for our community against the radical Leftists and the RINO’s (Republican in Name Only). I am firmly committed as your future representative in Congress to solving our community and country’s problems and defending your liberties during this unusual time. Republicans only need to pick up five critical seats in the House of Representatives to control the majority and do their part to Bring Back America.
My ties to the community began in 1962 when my parents along with their family owned business moved from Culver City, California to Ventura County where my family built their home in Thousand Oaks. That family home is now owned by my brother and his wife where my family still gets together on holidays and family events. My father moved their family owned printing business – Tayco Business Forms – to Westlake in 1962 becoming for a period of time the second largest employer in Ventura County. The business evolved and moved in the 1980’s to Newbury Park on land owned now by Amgen and eventually moved to Moorpark in the 1990’s. I was born in 1968 at Conejo Valley Hospital in Thousand Oaks, the last of seven children about a half mile from my house today. Interestingly, the hospital no longer exists at the corner of Erbes Rd. and Hillcrest in Thousand Oaks since Los Robles Hospital was built later that year.
My interest in the workings of our government and politics began for me as a child. I recall listening to the news in the 1970’s. In fact, I kept a journal as a child and made numerous entries about the problems facing the nation at that time which are quite similar to many of the problems we face today. As a child, I recall the news reporting on the nation’s double digit inflation and double digit interest rates caused by the Leftist policies of President Carter. Indeed, I made a few journal entries about the economy and the energy crisis, but I made a whole lot of entries about the embarrassment we all felt as a nation due to the take over of our embassy and the sixty-six Americans hostages that were taken.
Later, in 1980, I was drawn to President Reagan’s candidacy because of his visible patriotic energy and his laissez-faire approach to the economy which ultimately rescued our nation from economic stagnation. As a matter of fact, during this time, I was attending Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks and I placed 'Reagan '80' bumper stickers on all my school folders and all of my book covers for each and every class. Living through and witnessing President Reagan’s successes such as the return of our hostages on the very day President Reagan was sworn in and the bringing back of our economy based on his conservative policies profoundly reinforced my conservative values and appreciation of limited government reach.
After attending middle school in Ventura County, I attended Westlake High School and graduated in 1986 as a honor roll student. Moreover, I played football with recognition as an all-league player and also was on the wrestling team. During the four years at Westlake High School, I witnessed the end of stagflation brought about by President Carter’s Leftist agenda and also witnessed the return of a robust economy to our community and nation.
After Westlake High School, I attended Brigham Young University where I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. Much of my emphasis was on political philosophy from Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Descartes, Rousseau, Nietzche, Alexis de Toqueville and others on the human condition which inevitably winds up to a discussion of human nature and their battle of tyranny versus liberty. I spent much time in upper division courses devoted solely to the Federalist Papers written by James Madison, the father of our Constitution, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. The Federalist Papers are the single greatest source to the intent of our founders in their drafting of our U.S. Constitution. These courses were fascinating to me, inspired me and enlightened me to even greater depths for my appreciation and value of our liberty versus the tyranny and control advocated by radical Leftists.
While at BYU, I became politically active and worked for the successful campaign for U.S. Senate of Bob Bennett where I first-hand learned the value of relating to the electorate by using a grass-roots approach to a campaign. Like many of us, I suffered challenges in life. After my first year at Brigham Young University, given the changes in technologies during this era, my father’s printing business began to struggle and I was therefore cut-off from all financial support from my family including my tuition and education. In light of my desire to finish my education and eventually go to law school, I became a waiter at restaurant called Tony Roma’s to support myself by working nearly 40 hours a week while at the same attending Brigham Young University as a full-time student.
In the midst of my studies at Brigham Young University, I also made the decision to put my studies on hold for a few years and became a non-paid volunteer in Washington, D.C. serving as a missionary for my church. While in Washington D.C., I met then U.S. Senator Orin Hatch who inspired me with his vast knowledge and quick wit in defending liberty and conservative principles. It’s interesting because, I chose to postpone my education to serve, minister and assist other people, yet I was also ended up being the beneficiary of this service. The 25 months spent for me serving so many different and interesting cultures and wonderful races coupled with the challenges I faced while there, endowed me with a discipline, work ethic and confidence that I never possessed prior to my choice to serve. When asked about my time in Washington, D.C. I have just one usual response: “If someone paid me a million bucks to do it again, it was so difficult, wouldn’t accept it, but if someone paid me a million bucks to take away the discipline, work ethic, confidence and human experiences I learned from my service, I would not accept it either.” It was among the most life-altering, difficult, yet rewarding experiences of my life and I am grateful for the character building lessons I learned.
After Brigham Young University, I attended Pepperdine University, School of Law in Malibu and earned my Juris Doctor Degree in 1998. Later, in the summer of 1998, I sat for the California Bar Exam, passed it, and in the same year, put out my shingle as an attorney by opening my law practice in Beverly Hills. I set out to protect our legal rights in the courtroom as litigator. During my career as an attorney, I litigated against Fortune 500 companies and some of the largest banks in the world which accordingly used the largest law firms in the world against me and I prevailed. I litigated and worked on sophisticated cases in the courts of California, Arizona, Utah and the state of New York. Many of my cases dealt with publicly traded companies and securities law which was highly complex. Ultimately, with my successes in defending our rights, even judges, attorneys, well-known actors, musicians, professional athletes and celebrity chefs came to know me and they hired me as their trusted attorney. Additionally, in the midst of my career, I spent time in the summer of 2012 working on the Presidential Campaign of Mitt Romney. At that time, he portrayed himself as a candidate with respect to politics as one with conservative values. Accordingly, I learned from working on that campaign that it’s more important to be authentic and portray yourself as to what truly is at your core and in your soul with respect to your values. For me, my core and soul with respect politics is my adoration and love of liberty and firm desire to help our community and our nation.
Around 2012, I so loved my roots and our community that I decided to move back from the city to Thousand Oaks. Additionally, at this time, my father was terminally ill with cancer and my mother was also suffering from a terminal illness and I fortunately was present to assist and love them during this difficult time. Presently, I am living in Thousand Oaks about a half mile from the home I was raised while operating two independent businesses. One business is as a landlord here in our community and the other business is as a consultant to the education and medical industries. However, the most important title and job in my life and there’s no close second is that I am a father of my 14 year old son Colton. He is my heart.
Like many, if not all of us as human beings, I have suffered struggles in life. Indeed, I have suffered monumental set-backs in both my personal life and career. None of these set-backs prevent me from serving our community and nation as your Representative of in Congress. In fact, the opposite is true because struggles refine us and make us better human beings. When we prevail over those hurdles in life, we become stronger, wiser and more confident to conquer the issues that we will face in the future. For me, my struggles poignantly hurt me and therefore as I was able to conquer and put those struggles behind me, I became stronger, wiser and more experienced in order to better serve for you in Congress. In reality, I am able to connect and relate to all whom in our community have suffered with personal or financial set-backs. To screw up, is to be human. Welcome to humanity! The past is our past and I look to the future in solving the many issues facing our nation and community beginning now and into the future. Accordingly, now is the time to better this community and be proud of our Country and Bring Back America!
